Standing in the middle of a path, was a young kitsune. Suddenly he crouched low to the ground in order to better inspect an insect of some sort. A small, childish gleam of joy came into his silver-speckled, gold eyes. The many-legged creature below him was very entertaining.
He completely forgot his mother was looking for him, and he for her.
Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama were walking down the road. Tired of listening to Youko’s pleas to be let out, Kurama finally gave into the stubborn fox.
A couple minutes later, the four of them came upon a small figure bent over the dirt. They all stopped and watched for a minute.
To their surprise, it stood up and looked at them with big, scared eyes.
“Hey, Youko, it’s your very own Mini Me,” Yusuke snickered.
It was true. The little fox demon looked almost identical to the silver thief. Only a few minor differences set the two apart. Whereas Youko had pure silver hair and gold eyes, the little one had gold streaks in his silver hair, and silver specks in his golden eyes.
“Daoud!”
They all stared in shock as another kitsune ran out of the trees and swiftly picked up the child.
“Don’t do that again!” she scolded.
Suddenly she realized there were others there. She flushed and smiled weakly.
“I’m sorry if—” she broke off, staring at Youko.
The three other Spirit Detectives looked at their companion, too. To their surprise, the fox demon was looking at the female with sad recognition.
“Rabea,” he said.
You frowned, a sharp pang stabbing through your chest. “Youko.”
“Mommy, isn’ my daddy named Youko?” the little one asked suddenly.
Youko paled, but you just stared at him impassively. “Yes, he is.”
Daoud squirmed before hopping out of your arms and going to stand before Youko, his arms crossed. He glared at his father.
“Mommy says you didn’t be fateful to her…you a bad daddy!” he growled.
Yusuke started snickering at the childishly high growl, until Hiei jabbed him in the stomach with his elbow.
Youko stared at you, shock and sadness in his golden gaze. You returned his look, trying hard not to cry. His presence was tearing open the wound in your heart—reminding you that you still loved him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked softly.
Hiei swiftly pushed the other two away to give you two peace.
You noticed, but said nothing. “Because by the time I found out, you were already sleeping with her…”
Youko frowned. “Sakura?”
“Who else?” you snapped bitterly.
Daoud looked over at you, before running to your side. He swiftly latched himself to your legs and clung to you.
“Rabea…I never…slept with Sakura…” Youko said slowly. “She tried to get me to, but I never did. I loved you…I was going to make you—”
“Your mate, I know,” you growled. “That’s why it hurt to see you sleeping with her. You didn’t even wake up when I ran out in tears.”
The silver kitsune frowned in confusion, before growling. “She must have snuck in and out when I was asleep. You’ve got to believe me, Rabea…”
You just looked at him sadly, before sighing. “That is something she would do…”
He nodded. “Yes…”
“Why didn’t you come after me, then?” you asked.
“Because she told me you ran off with some dog demon,” he growled.
You snorted. “Doe he look like the son of a dog demon?” you asked, pointing at Daoud.
Youko chuckled. “No…”
“Mommy, I’m sleepy,” Daoud said, yawning.
You sighed and picked him up, holding him close. He put his head on your shoulder, before closing his eyes.
“Well, Youko, it was nice seeing you again,” you said softly. “But I have a sleepy son to take care of…good-bye…” You started walking away.
“Wait!”
You turned around and looked at him, trying hard not to let the memories rush back to you.
“What?”
He walked towards you slowly. “He’s been out of my life for this long, and you’re going to just take my son away from me now?” he asked incredulously.
“Yes.”
He stopped as if you’d hit him. “Why?” he managed to croak out.
“Because you would just leave us again, and he wouldn’t understand. He’s too young, Youko. It’s better this way…” you said softly, tears filling your eyes.
“What makes you think I would do that?” he asked, obviously hurt you would think so little of him.
“Because you’re part of the Spirit Detectives…” you whispered.
He just sighed softly, his own eyes filled with a pain. “Only because I died…but instead of accepting death, I forced myself to bond with an unborn human baby…Koenma found Shuichi…”
You tilted your head at the name of the god’s son. Smiling a little, you shifted Daoud in your arms.
He was getting heavy.
“Are you going to visit Koenma anytime soon?” you asked curiously.
Youko gave you a strange look, before nodding slowly. “We’re on our way to visit him, why?”
“I’ve been meaning to see him again…” you murmured, once again having to shift Daoud’s form.
You could hear your once-upon-a-time lover clear his throat, causing you to look up at him in surprise. Youko was never nervous, yet there he was, staring at you apprehensively.
“What?” you asked, tilting your head.
He almost smiled, almost, but then he looked nervous again. “Can…I mean…do you want…me to hold him?”
You stared at him in shock. He wanted to hold Daoud? He wanted to hold your son?! He’s Youko’s son as well, a voice calmly reminded you. Yes, but I’ve raised him since he was a kit on my own, you snapped back. With Koenma’s help.
While arguing with yourself, you unconsciously held the little boy’s body closer to you, but Youko noticed. His eyes widened slightly, before looking hurt and sorrowed.
He completely forgot his mother was looking for him, and he for her.
