A/N: I haven’t read many Wolf’s Rain fics, but the few I have read, they are ALL You/Kiba. I have read only ONE You/Toboe (props to the writer I have currently forgotten the name of ^.^’). So…I’m going to write a You/Tsume, for my own pleasure, as well as, hopefully, for yours!
Yeah…um…
Key!:
“ “ = speaking…or sarcastic emphasis…
‘ ‘ = animals speaking…
Italics = thoughts…
Now, on with it!

“Get back here, thief!” a baker yelled out from his shop’s doorway.
You didn’t even bother to slow down. You continued running, the hot pastry clutched tightly in your cold fingers. Slowing down, you dove into a dark alley and hid in the shadows. It wasn’t that you thought someone would follow you because of a stolen pastry; it was more of a precaution. You wanted to keep people from finding the building you were “loitering” in.
Sighing a little, you slid down the wall and began to tear off pieces, and stuff them into your mouth. All manners were forgotten in the face of a week-starved stomach. If my parents could see me now, you thought morbidly as you licked the icing off your fingers. I’d be even more of a disappointment than I already am. A semi-comfortable silence fell over the dark alley, and you weren’t in any mood to disturb it.
Suddenly a pathetic whimper split the silence. Jumping to your feet out of instinct, you peered meticulously into the shadows.
“Hello? Who’s there?” you asked.
There was no answer. Grumbling to yourself, you pulled out a dying flashlight and turned it on. The sight you found surprised you greatly.
Lying on its side in a slowly growing puddle of blood was a dark grey wolf. Your eyes widened in surprise, as you rushed over to the poor creature. Kneeling next to it, you gently started probing its limp, seemingly unconscious body, for broken bones. Suddenly it growled, baring its teeth.
“Hey, don’t even growl at me,” you growled back. “I’m going to help you.”
‘How’re you going to do that?’ it asked. ‘You’re just a pathetic human.’ It tried to stand up, but didn’t manage anything more than to show you its gender.
“I’m a lot more than what I seem. Besides,” you added. “It’s not like anyone else will help you.”
‘I’d rather die then let you take care of me.’ It snarled at you, baring its teeth again.
“Fine. Go to your stupid Paradise. If you can get in, that is.” Standing up, you started walking away.
‘Wait!’
You stopped and looked over your shoulder to see it had looked at you.
“What?” you asked, turning around.
‘How do you know about Paradise?’ it asked, narrowing the golden eyes suspiciously.
“I’m not really human,” you growled. “Do you want my help or not?”
The wolf put its great head back down.
“Fine Mr. Tough-Guy…but if your mate moves on, remember it’s all your fault!”
The effect of your statement was instantaneous. The wolf’s entire angry aura disappeared, and he seemed to droop. He curled up in a ball. It hit you he had no mate, and you winced.
Sighing, you walked over to kneel next to him. You gently, but firmly, placed your hand on top of his head. Your fingers entwined themselves into the soft fur.
“I did not mean to bring up a painful past…or a longed-for future,” you said softly.
The male made no reply, but you felt him lean into you just a little. You smiled sadly.
Suddenly a sun coloured dingo with a reddish brown ridge that went from the nose up through the large ears, on down to the base of the tail, appeared in your place.
You curled up behind him, and started licking his wounds tenderly. He whimpered in pain.
‘I’m sorry,’ you said and stood up. ‘I had no right.’
The wolf panted heavily. ‘No…don’t stop…’
‘I can do no more; you will only bleed to death. If you let me help you, I will do my best to save you…so that you may find a mate,’ you said, staring at him with your amber eyes.
‘You are…wise…for…your age,’ he said, grunting in pain. ‘Why…how do you…know so…much?’
You smiled bitterly, human again. “I grew up to soon, that is all you need to know now. Do you accept my help or not?”
‘I…’
You sighed as he passed out from the blood lost. He’ll only hurt you, a voice said in your mind.
I know.
Picking him up, you let out a surprised gasp at his light weight. The realization that you had to hurry hit you like a volley of arrows, so you sped up your pace.
You were naturally very fast, so it didn’t take you long to find a broken down, deserted building. It appeared to be an old theatre. Sure enough, once inside, you found a ladder leading to an attic-like place.
Grunting, you put the massive, yet unhealthily light, wolf over your shoulder and started to climb. It wasn’t easy, because he couldn’t cling to you, so you had to climb and keep him from falling to his death.
It’d be faster and less painful. He’d just never wake-up.
Reaching the top, you looked around the loft. It was perfect, and it appeared other homeless, or outlaws at least, had thought the same. There was an array of furniture, and even an old mattress.
Placing him on the softest place, you popped and cracked various places, before sighing heavily. It was going to be a very long night.

A/N: Yes, I know it’s pretty short. But…really…you can’t blame me, can you?
Hige: Techniquely, they could.
Techniquely isn’t a word? Hmm…
Anyway! I’m sorry if Tsume seems a bit OOC in this chapter. It’s hard to write him in pain, and alone. Because if Hige was there, he’d be stronger just to make Hige look like an idiot. If Toboe was there, he’d be stronger so the little one would look up to him. If Kiba was there, he’d be a jerk-butt and stronger, to show Kiba he would be just as good of a leader as him.
Tsume: How do you know me so well?
You talk in your sleep…among other things…
Tsume: O.O *walks off muttering darkly to self*
Hige: Heh…
Shut up. Anyway! Please review! Pleeeeeaasee? It’s my first Wolf’s Rain fic, so don’t flame me. I probably will ignore it.
